The Etymons of Mummies, and Volume

SCALIGER remarks, that they have called Mummies the bodies of Egyptians, because they embalmed them with a perfume which they called Amomum.

We call a Book, frequently, a Volume. The derivation of this word is from the Latin, volvere—to roll; because the letters and the works of the Ancients were written on very long leaves, when the matter required it; and when they closed them, they were made up into rolls or Volumes.
